Media Profile

Among one of the most popular fantasy film franchises, Pirates of the Caribbean is a film series based on the Walt Disney theme park ride under the same name. The films take place in a fictional historical setting; a world ruled by the British Empire, the East India Trading Company, and the Spanish Empire - with pirates representing freedom from the ruling powers. The film series began in 2003 with Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl , which received positive reviews from critics and grossed $654M worldwide. Following the first film's great success, Walt Disney Pictures soon announced that the franchise would be a trilogy, releasing a successful sequel titled Dead Man's Chest three years after the release of the first film. Audiences Lesson One

What is an audience? Without audiences there would be no media.  Media organisations produce media texts to make profit - no audience = no profit.  The mass media is becoming more competitive than ever to attract more and more audiences in different ways and stay profitable.  Types of audiences Mainstream is aimed at mass audiences, whereas more alternative is aimed towards niche audiences.  Impact of new technology on audiences Old media (TV, Print, Radio) which used to have high audience numbers must now work harder to maintain audience numbers.  New media (digital technology) has also led to an increasing uncertainty over how we define an audience, with the general agreement that a large group of people reading the same thing at the same time is outdated and that audiences are now 'fragmented'.

12th September

Today in lesson we were looking at the impact Radio has as a media and communication device, then we were tasked to look up 3 local radio stations and identify their format and who they're owned by etc. Then we had to set up a basic listener profile for each radio station that we had researched. Our objectives today were as follows; Name radio stations broadcasting in the UK Recognise what is meant by 'format' Identify the format for different radio stations Create a target listener for three given stations

In today's lesson we were basically reintroducing ourselves to the media course, in which we set up a new blog for our second year and wrote out our basic objectives for this year.
